My problem was that I didn't have a 1PPS connection on the DCD line to my pc. There are two signs that appear if you don't have it ... if the display digits are blue instead of black, and if you don't see a "ticking" red light on the display. If you can assure yourself that you have a proper 1PPS connection, the TAC32 sets the pc clock just fine. Tac32 Version 2.0 will have an option to allow the PC clock to be set without a 1PPS signal, although the accuracy of the resulting time will be significantly degraded. I built one, and it receives overhead satellites very well, though lower elevation ones are weaker. As described, it's a passive antenna using two brass sheets. I couldn't find brass stock large enough for the ground plane portion when I built mine, so I used single-sided PC board with the copper up. Since the fiberglass is not part of the dielectric between the antenna element and ground plane, it shouldn't have any effect on the behaviour of the antenna. Someone else pointed out that if you use a PC board groundplane like this, it's pretty easy to start with double-sided board, and etch the bottom side to provide a place to install an MMIC preamp, with the signal paths from the antenna to the MMIC and from the MMIC to output coax being 50 ohm microstrip. I haven't tried this, but it seems that it should work well. Other designs: Someone else somewhere on the web suggested building an 8-turn helix on ABS DWV (drain waste vent) plumbing pipe. It is almost exactly the diameter you need (60 mm) to make the circumference one wavelength, and an 8-turn helix makes a nice high-gain antenna. Which, if you think about it, is a really dumb idea, because a GPS antenna should *not* be directional. Sure enough, there a a deep null in the pattern for satellites somewhere around 45 degrees elevation. However, someone (Tom?) pointed out that a *two* turn helix isn't very directional, and with an MMIC preamp (to compensate for low gain) makes a good GPS antenna. I think he made his from a yoghurt container and an aluminum pie plate, which is certainly good for low cost. The ABS pipe is still an option if you'd like a slightly more robust helix form. Finally, I've seen another design somewhere on the web for a quadrifilar helix antenna made out of thin semi-rigid coax. It also looks like a good design, but I don't have the URL handy. Try searching for "gps antenna" and "quadrifilar" on the web. I know it would be attractive to do something useful with the AOL CD's, but I don't think you can make a circular patch circularly polarized. You'd at least have to change it into an ellipse, and that nonconducting hole in the center would be a problem too. The best use I've found for them is to put them around Christmas lights as reflectors. The center hole is large enough for the bulb base to go through, but small enough to be held by the bulb body and socket. I noted that a small Yoplait Yoghurt cup (a slightly tapered cone) was a good size to use. The "magic" numbers are that a helix should have a circumference ~1 wavelength, and that the "screw" should have a pitch angle ~10 degrees. Since GPS L1 = 1575 MHz, 1 wavelength = 19 cm, and hence the proper diameter is 19/pi = 6 cm = 2.4". Since a helix is a wide-band device, you can be in error by up to ~20%, so 2" diameter is OK. The 10 degree pitch means that the height of each turn is 19*sin(10 deg)= 3.3 cm = 1.3". The material is not critical. I have used wire, but for the Yoplait helix, I used 1/4" wide adhesive-backed foil tape. The feed-point impedance of a helix is ~140 ohms, and to make a better match into 50 ohms, the common practice is to make the initial quarter-turn be "flat" and fairly close to the ground plane. With the Yoplait cup, I used copper foil tape for the launching section and found that I got a good match using the "Nutrition Facts" box as a template. In my Yoplait helix, I used a MiniCircuits ERA-3 MMIC amplifier (cost ~$2). The only other "real parts" needed were a ~20 ohm 1/4 watt resistor and an SMA connector. I had intended to write it up, but I became discouraged over mechanical problems. First of all, the plastic in the Yoplait cup did not weather well, was brittle, and was hard to glue to the ground-plane. Second, I never did come up with a rugged way to mount the MMIC amplifier so that its leads would not be stressed and break after use. Thaqt was about the time that we started to get the nifty little Motorola "Antenna-97" for ~$50 (see http://www.tapr.org or http://www.cnssys.com). That little off-the-shelf antenna outperformed my helix and I didn't have to teach folks how to build microwave circuits. So I gave up on the project -- not that it didn't work, but it wasn't worth the hassle! FYI -- one of the niftyest little antennas is the half-quadrifilar helix that Garmin provides with the GPSII/III (which is similar to the 45/48 antenna). I have dissected one and it consists of a small piece of thin PCB material formed into a cylinder about .5" diameter x 1.5" long. On the PCB they have printed a full balun & quadrature hybrid driving 4 gamma-matched spiral antennas. This would be a really great "Midnite Reverse Enbgineering" project for someone to tackle! The thread then turned to patch antennas. The commercial patches are all printed on ceramic with high dielectric constant. The Motorola seems to use epsilon=10 ceramic, which shortens the antenna by a factor sqrt(epsilon) (the inverse of what is often called the velocity factor). A patch needs elements about a half-wave in size. For epsilon=10, this means that (lambda/2)/sqrt(epsilon) is about 3 cm. There are two common ways to get circular polarization from a patch. One involves the use of a real quad hybrid and two feed-ponts on a square patch. The second scheme uses a rectangular patch. In one dimension, the patch is shorter than a half-wave and hence is inductive. The other dimension is long and hence capacitive. The trick is to get the two directions excited with a net 90 degree phase difference. This is not a trivial exercise! On the ceramic patch antennas, the manufacturers usually laser trim the metalization to get the sizes just right. This is made more difficult because the physically shortened structure is a very narrow-band, high-Q structure. The antennas typically have a bandwidth ~5 MHz -- good for suppressing RFI, but a bitch to tune! I first realized just how twitchy the antennas were when I was testing a Ball Bros. spacecraft antenna printed on epsilon=4 or 5 ceramic (and hence ~2" in size). I was concerned with the properties of the plastic radome they provided -- as I recall, it was made of thin Lexan and I was concerned with its properties in vaccuum when exposed to UV. The antenna had ~5 MHz bandwidth. Popping off the radome raised the resonant frequency by 10-15 MHz, making it totally useless for GPS! Related to this is an anecdotal report I had on the early Garmin GPS 38/40 with an epsilon=10 patch built into the plastic case. One batch of the receivers had very poor sensitivity which the grapevine reported was due to manufacturing tolerance problems in the plastic case. In addition to being very narrow-band, the dielectrically loaded patch antennas tend to be more lossy than their full-sized relatives. This is why a small patch MUST have a good LNA built into it. The high-Q and loss problems are the reason that I always make the recommendation that you will get better weak-signal GPS performance from handheld with external antennas (like the half-quads used in the GPSII/III) than from their patch antenna brethren (like the GPS-12). And the high-Q, narrow bandwidth characteristic is the reason I tell people not to paint their patch antennas, even if they HATE the color! I don't have the reference at hand, but I recall it was published in UKW Berichte. The author was Matjaz Vidmar, Y53MV. For his PhD thesis, Matjaz built his own GPS & GLONASS receivers from scratch in ~1991-2. That was at the time that Slovenia was in the process of becoming one of the "fission remnants" of Yugoslavia and Matjaz was able to built the receivers by using a very clever and original design. Matjaz is now on the faculty at the Univ. of Lubljana and has recently been active building most of the receivers for AMSAT's P3D satellite. His quadrifilar was built of 0.141" semi-rigid coax plus a BNC or SMA connector. As a final "work in progress" report -- I mentioned a few weeks ago that I have developed a very low-cost low multipath choke-ring antenna. Just tonite, I finished the "final" version and it is working this very minute. FYI -- it uses the ~$50 Motorola antenna I mentioned above plus < $20 in parts available at your local hardware and kitchen-ware stores. The only tools needed are a drill and a pop-rivet tool. It mounts on a standard surveyor's tripod (i.e. 5/8"-11 thread) and should be able to last in the weather! Not really -- the concept of "capture area" really only applies to antennas bigger the ~one wavelength in size. For small antennas, the capture area is really a measure of the directivity of the antenna, and even an infinitesimal dipole has nearly the same directivity as a half-wave dipole, and both have a capture area ~ 0.12 lambda**2 when hung in free-space. Any of the patch antennas we have been discussing are essentially half-wave dipoles, and they are used over a ground- plane (which screens out half the universe), so they have something like 0.25 lambda**2 of "area". BTW, the same argument applies to small magnetic loop antennas. The problem with under-sized antennas (like the NSS VLF poles across the river) is getting enough current to flow in the structure in an antenna that has nearly zero radiation resistance (dominated by the capacitive reactance). Aside: In mathematical terms, the directivity G of an antenna is given by 4*pi*Aeq G= ---------- lambda**2 where Aeq is the equivalent collecting area. Take the antenna pattern and integrate it over the full 4*pi steradians of sky = beam solid angle (usually written as a Capital Omega). I found it tonite and scanned it for you. The attached drawing is in GIF format. All dimensions are in millimeters (except for the 0.141" semi- rigid coax). The 1.80 mm wire diameter shown shouldn't be too critical. You can probably use AWG #12 or #14, or small brass welding rod. You will see from the drawing that you will need 4 pieces of wire, with 2@ 100 mm=3.94" and 2@ 105 mm=4.13" length. You might find it easier to use two pieces twice this length, since the bottom end solders to the coax. Note that you have to form the 4 pieces of wire into half- turn twists, and that the helix sections are wound with a left-hand twist to make RCP. This is not an error because the antenna is a back- fire helix. If you try to analyze the antenna, the 5 cm height from the lower solder joints to the feedpoint serves as a balun for the 0.141" coax. The extra length of the 0.141" semi-rigid coax is arbitrary. I see no reason that you couldn't mount a MMIC LNA at the feedpoint. An ERA-3 would give ~20 dB of gain.
